According to recently released data from Gusto, the payroll provider, veterans made up 8 percent of the new businesses started in 2023. That’s up from 5 percent in both 2021 and 2022 and, as the report notes, exceeds veterans’ share of the U.S. population: 6 percent. But something stands out in the types of businesses they’ve launched, says Gusto economist Nich Tremper: More than half — 56 percent — founded businesses in the personal services sector, compared with 35 percent of all entrepreneurs.
